1 – Who we are & our goals

Our website addresses are: https://frenchirl.com and https://bitesizefrench.com. FrenchIRL (“French In Real Life”, “Frenchirl”, “The French in Real Life Project”, “Bitesize”, “Bitesize French”, “The site”, “We”) operates under French IRL LLC (A Wisconsin registered Limited Liability Company).

Our goal is to help you easily immerse in spoken French through short, challenging audio snippets.

The following outlines our data usage policies and your rights.

2 – Personal Data & Privacy Protection

FrenchIRL complies fully with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the U.S. Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). We do not sell personal data. We do share marketing information for advertising purposes on select sales pages, this is limited to non-direct identifiers about actions taken on site. We do not use Student Data or school account information for marketing or advertising purposes.

2.1 Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to prevent spam.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

2.2 Media

If you upload media (audio, text, images) to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

2.3 Forms (contact us forms and lesson forms)

Contact us forms will collect data about your name and email address. This will let us get in touch with you to share the latest lessons, articles from the blog, updates about the project, and any other notes of interest for learners of French. You can opt out at any time or request that we share what information we have about you.

When logged into the site, data from each “quiz” or lesson on site is stored and used to personalize your learning experience and recommendations. These are unique to each user and remain private.

2.4 Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

We use tools such as the Meta Platforms (Facebook) Pixel on certain pages to help us measure and improve our marketing. These tools collect information about how you interact with our website (such as pages visited and actions taken).

We do not share directly identifiable information such as your name or email address with these partners. Student data is never shared.

2.5 Personalized Learning & Recommendations

When you use clips and lessons on the site, we collect information about how you interact with the content in order to improve your learning experience. This may include: any and/or all activity related to completing clip listening practice (such as: playtime, attempts, hints used, difficulty settings, etc.).

Non-logged in (“guest”) learners who access and complete clips on site will have a 7-day cookie saved. This is used to build your vocabulary Logbook and predict recommendations for enhanced learning. When you create a Logbook Explorer (free) or Precision Listening account on site, these saved words will be added to your logbook and the cookie will expire. This cookie is only used for recommendations and your Logbook and lets us track your clip progress on site.

The above data is used to enhance your experience on site by serving recommendations, allowing you to remember what you have practiced with, and save/see vocabulary (among other benefits).

We do not use this data for advertising purposes, and we do not sell or share this data with third parties.

This processing is necessary to provide the core functionality of the service and is based on our legitimate interest in improving learning outcomes and your experience on the platform.

2.6 Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

2.7 Analytics and advertising

Google Analytics is a web analytics service offered by Google that tracks and reports website traffic.

We use Google Analytics to understand site traffic. Data is anonymized and never sold or monetized. Opt-out via Google Analytics Opt-Out Browser Add-on. Google’s policy: http://www.google.com/intl/en/policies/privacy/.

Learning data collected within quizzes is separate from analytics and is used only for educational purposes within the platform.

Advertising measurement tools are used only on our public retail pages and are not used in our learning platform or student areas. We may also use limited advertising conversion measurement tools for our retail pages only, as described in Section 2.10.1 below.

2.8 Mailchimp

We use Mailchimp and its associated cookies to register emails into our contact list and for our email newsletter.

2.9 – Children’s Privacy (COPPA)

We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13 without explicit parental or school consent. If unintentionally collected, data is immediately deleted upon notification.

2.10 – Educational Data (FERPA Compliance)

FrenchIRL respects student privacy according to FERPA. For school partnerships, whether as optional resources for students or as part of the curriculum, a Data Processing Agreement (DPA) or school agreement for data processing may be required. FrenchIRL will execute as per requirements of the school. Schools retain ownership and control of all student data, which we use solely for educational purposes. Schools may request data deletion or export at any time.

2.11 – Your Rights to your data (GDPR)

You have rights to access, update, export, or erase your data at any time. This includes any learning profile or quiz interaction data associated with your account. Contact: hello@frenchirl.com.

2.11.1 – Who we share your data with

We do not sell or market your data. Data may be shared minimally to provide essential services (e.g., password resets include your IP address).

Student Accounts are at the request of and paid for by schools. Your clip data including but not limited to: clip name, time spent, errors counted, errors logged, hints used, percentage blank will be shared with your teacher and other school administrators.

We use limited advertising and conversion measurement tools (such as Meta/Facebook Ads) only on our public retail marketing pages (for example: /try-it, /register, and purchase confirmation pages). These tools are never active on student accounts, learning areas or classroom content. We take technical steps to ensure that student users are excluded from all advertising measurement. The information used for advertising analytics is limited to basic technical data (such as page URL, browser type, and purchase value) and is used only to measure the performance of our retail marketing. We do not use Student Data, any clip or learning activity, or school account information for advertising or marketing purposes.

2.11.2 – How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

2.11.3 – What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

2.11.4 – Where your data is sent

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

2.11.5 – Data Security

We store data securely, employing technical and physical safeguards. Data is stored within secure servers in GDPR-compliant locations.

2.11.6 – Student Accounts and Educational Data

Student Accounts are created and paid for by schools at the request of the educational institution. Clip data — including, but not limited to, clip name, time spent, errors counted, errors logged, hints used, and percentage blank — may be accessed by your teacher and other authorized school administrators for educational and assessment purposes.

This data sharing is conducted solely within the educational context and is not made available to any third parties outside the school organization. Students (or their parents/guardians, where applicable) may request a copy of their data or ask for deletion, except where the data must be retained for legitimate educational or legal reasons.
