Our system analyzes every clip and assigns CEFR difficulty to each word. Show more of the transcript and students are tested on beginner-level vocabulary. Hide more and they’re gradually tested on more challenging words from the same clip. One clip, five levels of difficulty. No prep required from you. When students work independently they make their own scaffolding.
Built-in Scaffolding
Beginners get anchor words to build context. Advanced learners get more blanks. Audio loops automatically so students can hear the same phrase again and again until it clicks. I intended for learners to start at the “read along” level and work up to higher levels. The goal isn’t perfect transcription, it’s better listening through detecting anchor words and building confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does setup take?
We set up your account. Email us your student list (name, email, class) and we link them to your account. You get their passwords and can see everything in your Teacher Dashboard. Creating your first lesson takes a few clicks.
What about student data?
We are approved through the National Student Data Privacy consortium covering 15 states. See above for full list. We have also signed the Wisconsin Student Data Privacy Agreement. If your school or district uses either of those agreements the process is streamlined. If your district does not participate in those agreements, we can provide all details about what data is collected, how we use it, and enter into a vendor agreement if necessary. We only collect essential information and use it to track student progress and improve the tool’s functionality. We never sell student data.
What if my students don’t have devices?
While the bellringers were created for device-connected classrooms, the tool is flexible. You can still run classroom sessions where you control playback from your device projected on screen and students participate with notebooks. Independent practice still works great as homework or extra credit outside of class. Students log in on their own and results will track in your dashboard.
Can I use this with my existing curriculum?
Absolutely. Filter clips by grammar point, vocabulary theme, or CEFR level to match your current units. Or upload your own audio for instant processing.
Do you integrate with my LMS?
We’re working on LTI integrations. For now, students log in directly through our platform. Let us know your LMS and we’ll keep you posted.
How does billing work?
You get 12 months of full access, billed in quarterly installments of $99. This is not an ongoing subscription: when your year ends, nothing auto-renews. You decide whether to continue.
How do the bellringers work?
With an account, you can take any one of the clips on site and create an exercise for your class. Most teachers choose a podcast to work through for the term and work through one clip a day or a couple each week. You create the bellringer in less than a minute on your Teacher Dashboard, then when class starts, project it. Your students can join via QR code or link on their own device. Students fill in the transcript gaps on their own devices while you control the audio. The more you do this in class, the more your students will independently work on their listening to improve and “win” the bellringer.

A Note From the Founder
That gap between classroom language and the real spoken language is wide. I’ve lived it as a learner across four languages. I’ve watched it frustrate students and teachers for years. It leaves most students saying “Oh, I took French in high school” not “I speak French”.
We learn language through our ears, but most tools don’t make real listening practice repeatable, bite-sized, or easy to bring into a classroom. At least not without a ton of work by teachers or independent learners.
So I built FrenchIRL to fix that.
I wanted something that would work. That would genuinely save teachers time while giving students a way to build real confidence — not just test-taking confidence. The confidence you feel when you have been in the country. When you understand a French song on the radio or follow a conversation at a cafe. Actually being able to connect with people with the language.
